The subject for this painting was taken from the Book of Acts and relates to the miraculous liberation of St. Peter from prison. This painting is depicting St. Peter being visited by an angel while two soldiers were sleeping.
I have always loved this painting because of the emotions from St. Peters face, while hearing the voice from the angel who has come to rescue him from the dungeons of prison. --Ed Copley
