In this evocative sacred composition, artist Kevin Pawlowski honors Saint Mark the Evangelist alongside his traditional apostolic symbol, the lion. Set against a rugged savanna landscape, the crouching lion directly references the opening of Mark’s Gospel, where Jesus remains in the wilderness among wild beasts. The setting also pays tribute to Saint Mark’s historical legacy as the founder of the Church in Alexandria, Africa.
Behind the lion, parting clouds subtly form the shape of majestic wings, completing the classic iconography of the winged lion associated with Saint Mark. Pawlowski combines rich textures and symbolic depth to capture both the strength of the Evangelist and the fierce, royal dignity of the Gospel message.
Commissioned as part of a sacred mosaic series for Transfiguration Catholic Church, this work offers an inspiring meditation on the courage, wilderness origins, and enduring reach of early Christian faith.
