Rendered in a powerful contemporary realism style, this original oil painting honors Saint Maximilian Kolbe, the Franciscan friar who voluntarily offered his life in place of a stranger at Auschwitz. Kevin Pawlowski captures the saint’s profound spiritual composure, inner strength, and steadfast conviction amidst immense darkness.
In the artwork, Saint Kolbe wears his distinctive round spectacles and Franciscan habit, subtly accented by his prisoner number and the striped fabric of the concentration camp uniform. Rather than traditional crowns, his childhood vision of the Virgin Mary is reinterpreted in this painting. The red smokestacks of Auschwitz stand in for the red crown of martyrdom, while the serene mountains of Poland symbolize the white crown of purity. Pawlowski combines fine facial detail with expressive, textured brushwork, creating a moving testimony to faith, selfless love, and triumph over suffering.
Available as the original oil painting on canvas or in fine museum-quality giclée reproductions.
