Rembrandt's striking painting, Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee, is his only painted seascape. Painted in 1633, shortly after Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam from his native Leiden, he was establishing himself as the city's leading painter of portraits and historical subjects. The detail, the figures' varied expressions, polished brushwork, and the bright coloring are characteristic of Rembrandt's early style.
This scene depicts Christ's rebuke to his disciples as the storm tossing their fishing boat on the Sea of Galilee, "Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?"
