SUMMARY:An Evening with Caravaggio: The Sacred Art of the Past
DESCRIPTION:Encounter Caravaggio in the midst of the Counter Reformation…\nThe Sacred Art Gallery is pleased to host a special evening art history class\, “An Evening with Caravaggio: The Sacred Art of the Past\,” on Thursday\, December 11th from 6:30–8:00 p.m. This one-and-a-half hour talk/Q&A invites art lovers\, students of history\, and the faithful alike to discover the world of one of art’s most controversial and compelling figures—Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. \nCaravaggio was a master painter whose work electrified Rome at the turn of the 17th century. Known for his intense realism\, dramatic lighting\, and bold depictions of sacred subjects\, his paintings marked a decisive break from the polished idealism of the High Renaissance. Instead\, he embraced the raw\, gritty humanity of saints\, martyrs\, and biblical figures—bringing the Gospel to life in ways that startled\, inspired\, and sometimes scandalized his contemporaries. \nDuring a time when the Catholic Church was responding to the challenges of the Protestant Reformation\, Caravaggio’s art became a powerful tool for evangelization. His canvases spoke not only to the educated elite but also to the ordinary faithful\, drawing them into a vivid encounter with Christ and the saints. This lecture will explore how Caravaggio’s style embodied the spirit of the Counter Reformation and why his works continue to captivate viewers centuries later. \nYour Guide for the Evening\nLeading this class will be Enrique Diaz\, a longtime parishioner of St. Timothy Catholic Church in Mesa and a passionate advocate for the arts. Enrique graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in History and has dedicated more than two decades to education. For 16 years\, he served the Diocese of Phoenix as both teacher and administrator at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School. He has also taught Catholic Church History for adults and continues to share his love of faith and culture through lectures and community programs. \nIn addition to his academic background\, Enrique is himself an artist. He paints in acrylics and has even participated in our gallery’s Art Walk\, offering firsthand insight into the creative process. His ability to weave together history\, theology\, and visual analysis makes him an engaging and memorable speaker. \nEvening Details\n\n\nDate & Time: 12/11/25\, 6:30–8:00 p.m. \n\n\nLocation: The Sacred Art Gallery\,  Mesa \n\n\nTickets: $45 for a single ticket | $35 each for two or more \n\n\nIncluded: Complimentary snacks and bottled water \n\n\nThis evening promises not only to inform but also to inspire. Surrounded by sacred art in the gallery setting\, participants will have the chance to reflect on Caravaggio’s genius and consider how beauty serves the Church’s mission across the ages. \nWhether you are an art enthusiast\, a student of Church history\, or simply seeking a meaningful night out\, we invite you to join us for this immersive evening. Come see how the brush of Caravaggio continues to shed divine light in a world still in need of truth and beauty. \nSpace is limited. Reserve your seat today and encounter the sacred through the eyes of Caravaggio.

DESCRIPTION:The Sacred Art Gallery Welcomes\nKevin Pawlowski & Cole Dieterle\nEpiphany Art Walk | January 10\nJoin us as The Sacred Art Gallery celebrates the Feast of the Epiphany with a special January Art Walk on Saturday\, January 10\, from 2:00–5:00 p.m. We joyfully welcome Kevin Pawlowski and Cole Dieterle\, two of our out-of-town featured artists\, whose journeys bring them to our gallery bearing gifts of beauty\, craftsmanship\, and faith. \nEpiphany recalls the coming of the Magi—travelers from distant lands who followed the light and arrived bearing offerings for Christ. As the Gospel of Matthew proclaims: \n\n“And going into the house\, they saw the child with Mary his mother\, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then\, opening their treasures\, they offered him gifts\, gold and frankincense and myrrh.”—Matthew 2:11 \n\nIn this same spirit\, Kevin and Cole come from afar\, offering the fruits of their creative vocations—works shaped by prayer\, patience\, and devotion. \n\nFeatured Artists\nKevin Pawlowski\nBased in Woodstock\, Georgia\, Kevin Pawlowski brings a thoughtful and eclectic approach to Christian art\, working across multiple media and styles. His work reflects a balance of discipline and devotion\, drawing from both traditional techniques and contemporary expression. \nBy day\, Kevin serves as a marketing communications manager for an industrial chemical company. Outside of work\, he can be found meticulously snipping glass tiles for mosaics in his basement studio or painting antique etchings at his dining room table. Though he has been painting and drawing for over 30 years\, Kevin experienced a renewed calling toward religious and spiritual subjects beginning in 2012—a turning point that continues to shape his artistic life. \nHis works invite contemplation\, revealing sacred meaning through careful craft and material beauty. \n\nCole Dieterle\nCloser to God\, one letter at a time. \nCole Dieterle’s journey into sacred art began in 2016 with a simple love for fountain pens—an interest that soon unfolded into a vocation rooted in calligraphy and illuminated text. As his skill grew\, so did his sense that each carefully formed letter could become an act of prayer. \nInspired by Medieval and Renaissance illumination\, Cole creates manuscript-style renderings of familiar prayers and sacred quotations—texts often spoken from memory\, yet rediscovered through the slow\, intentional act of writing. In giving attention to each word\, Cole found himself drawn closer to God\, one letter at a time. \nAfter years of developing this work alongside a teaching career\, Cole took a leap of faith. Since Summer 2022\, sacred calligraphy has been his full-time vocation—supporting his family while sharing reverence\, beauty\, and devotion with others. \n\nWhat to Expect\nNew Sacred Works on DisplayExperience original pieces across multiple media—mosaic\, painting\, and illuminated calligraphy—each offered as a gift in the spirit of Epiphany. \nLocal Artists & VendorsBrowse work from several local artists and vendors whose creativity enriches our gallery gatherings. \nEpiphany Scavenger HuntTake part in a fun\, family-friendly scavenger hunt throughout the gallery—an engaging way to explore the art while celebrating the season of discovery and journey. \nSacred Art RaffleEnter for a chance to win a surprise sacred art piece—one lucky guest will take home a special work from the event. \nWarm HospitalityEnjoy hot drinks and treats as you stroll the gallery and share in conversation and community. \n\nJoin us as we celebrate Epiphany—welcoming artists from afar and the gifts they bring\, just as the Magi once did. \nAdmission is free. All are welcome.
