Rossi illuminated the first letters of selected Scripture texts from the Evening Prayer (Vespers) of feasts and Sundays of the year. \nHe has now assembled a collection of these marvelous miniatures where he displays a contemporary touch to an ancient tradition.

It’s called happenstance. I could never have guessed that being a flight attendant would set my art career in motion. But life changed the day I was called out for an unexpected trip to Paris. So what does one do with 24 hours in the city of light? The Louvre of course\, and seeing a collection of Russian Icons. Yes\, I was captivated and I knew I wanted to recreate this gorgeous art form.\nI really didn’t know where to begin. Even though I studies art in college\, I hadn’t picked up a brush in ages\, let alone painting icons! I was happy flying my trips and having a steady paycheck. But something was calling me. So with a little natural talent and a lot of time off\, I started experimenting. I tried everything under the sun. \nIt’s been many years and I’ve been creating old world inspired art ever since. Yes\, my style is kind of unusual but I want my viewers to feel like they’re looking into the past. I make my own canvas to get an aged effect and I build intricate frames around each image for another layer of art. I don’t use patterns. By displaying student works in a professional gallery setting and awarding their efforts\, we aim to recognize their achievements and highlight the enduring importance of sacred art in our communities. \nWho Can Participate\nThe contest is open to all high school students participating through their schools (includes SCP\, NDP\, BCP\, Xavier\, VDM\, Regina Caeli\, St. Mary’s\, JPII\, and Bourgade) or nearby parish (Saint Timothy’s in Mesa and Saint Clare’s in Surprise). Each school or parish will host a jury of three representatives to select four outstanding works to send forward to The Sacred Art Gallery in Mesa for exhibition and awards consideration. \nWhat to Create\nThis year’s theme is “Stories of Hope – The Lives of the Saints.” Students are invited to reflect on the courage\, perseverance\, and holiness of the saints\, bringing their stories to life through visual art. \nSize: 12” x 16” or smaller \nMediums: watercolor\, oil\, acrylic\, pastel\, pencil\, charcoal\, or mixed media on canvas\, board\, or paper \nRequirement: All works must be ready to hang \nSale Option: Students may choose to sell their artwork for $120.
