Rembrandt van Rijn was a Dutch draughtsman, painter, and printmaker who is generally considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art as well as the most important in Dutch art history.
Moved by the parable of the prodigal son, he made a variety of drawings, etchings, and paintings on the theme that spanned decades, beginning with a 1636 etching and culminating in this work which was probably completed within two years of his death in 1669.
