Edmund Blair Leighton (1853-1922) was a British painter of historical genre pictures, mainly of medieval times, but also of the 18th and 19th centuries. Very little is recorded of Leighton, the man. His nostalgia for an elegant chivalrous past, as well as his fastidious craftsmanship, explain the reason for his continuing popularity. Searches have been unsuccessful in locating any mention of him in biographies. Though he exhibited at the Royal Academy for over forty years, he was never an Academician or an Associate.
Leighton was the son of the artist Charles Blair Leighton and was educated at University College School, before becoming a student at the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited annually at the RA from 1878 to 1920. Leighton lived in Bedford Park, London, where he married in 1885 and raised two children. With his obvious interest in historic genre of paintings, it is not surprisingly that he was collector of old musical instruments, art, and furniture.
