Among the most famous paintings in the world, Leonardo D Vinci's "Last Supper" was painted between the years 1495 and 1498 on the end wall of the dining hall at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. Much larger than Da Vinci usually painted, 15 feet by 29 feet, the painting depicts the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with his Twelve Disciples when Jesus announced that one of them would betray him.
The fact that Da Vinci did not follow the usual technique of fresco painting led to its early deterioration, noticed by 1556. In 1652, a doorway was cut through the unrecognizable painting, and later bricked up which can be seen as the irregular arch shaped structure near the center base of the painting. The painting was damaged numerous times in its history, deliberately during the French Revolution, and inadvertently by incompetent restorers as well as Allied bombing during World War II.
In spite of over 500 years of history, it still remains one of the most beloved and copied paintings in history.
