Jesus is Laid in the Tomb
by Private Collections
Size: 55" x 33"Artist/Artists Unknown
One of 4 Stations of the Cross. Can be purchased separately or as a set
-Painted in the early 19th Century (Between 1800-1850)
- Artist was most likely from Germany or Netherlands (The faces of the people are very eastern European, specifically German), trained in the French academic style (he used canvas not linen and he used canvas on a tin back).
-Was also influenced by Italy, because of it’s classical “Roman†composition
-In the 1920’s someone used copper nails to secure the canvas more to the tin. The copper nails and screws are from that time frame, and the artist would have never nailed through his lines of paint. This is a good indication that it was taken down from it’s original church during WWI for safekeeping. --Sean Morton of Morton Appraisals
