Michelangelo Buonarroti created some of the most recognizable images in the history of art. In fact, he became so famous he became known simply as Michelangelo. He was the embodiment of the "Renaissance Man" - a sculptor, painter, architect, and poet.
Although known for his frescoes on the Sistine chapel, the artist thought of himself primarily as a sculptor. The Pieta , now in St. Peter's Basilica, is the most famous example of a devotional image, extracted from narrative scenes of the lamentation after Christ's death. The great art historian, Georgio Vasari, wrote: "It would be impossible for any craftsman or sculptor, no matter how brilliant, ever to surpass the grace or design of this work, or to try to cut and polish the marble with the skill that Michelangelo displayed." Of all his sculptures, the Pieta is the only sculpture Michelangelo ever signed.
Only a small percentage of the faithful will ever have the opportunity to view these iconic images of Christianity in real life. The Sacred Art Gallery is honored to offer the opportunity to own a piece of art history in the form of reduced sized limited edition bronze castings of some of Michelangelo's most famous images
